A drunk
driver killed Caitlin Weese in
May of 2003. One week before graduating from Larkin High School, and
just three weeks before her 18th Birthday.
In 2004, the first annual walk
was organized to As of 2005, Walk 5K For Caitlin became an officially registered 501(c)3 non-profit organization. Please visit our donations page for many ways you can help support our cause. Thank You... The 2010 walk was another huge success thanks to everyone who walked, donated, or just kept us in their thoughts and prayers. Because of the care you showed, we had a great weekend. Walk 5K For Caitlin crosses Lake Michigan! Ok, technically we didn't actually walk on water, but the message definitely did cross over. Every year we hand out helium balloons for everyone to carry with them during the walk. Once everyone returns, we release all the balloons sort of as a ceremonial way to remember CaitlinWeese and also as a subtle way to remind people not to drink and drive. This year, one of the pink balloons released was reported found in a cornfield roughly 140 miles away in Plainwell, Michigan. The person who found the balloon replied back to us on the Walk 5K For Caitlin Facebook Causes page. That same person had a sister who was also killed by a drunk driver. Special Thanks to... Top Notch Screenprinting and Embroidery in Loves Park, IL for donating this year's t-shirts & Landin Chiropractic who provided free stretch, rub downs and massages for the walkers & runners
Caitlin Weese was the
first to benefit from the In January 2008, the Illinois Legislature approved a new Roadside Memorial Marker Act intended to raise public awareness about the danger of driving under the influence. This Act permits roadside memorials to be placed along Illinois roadways, marking where victims of drunk driving have died. Caitlin Weese is the first DUI victim in Illinois to be memorialized in this manner. See Chicago TV News broadcast stories of this event on YouTube - 10/22/08 The sign is a little smaller than a speed limit sign, with a blue background and white lettering showing the message: "Please Don't Drink and Drive". A separate panel below notes "In memory of Caitlin Weese" and date of her fatal crash on May 22, 2003. This first Roadside Memorial sign has been placed along Rt. 72, just south of Gilberts and west of I90 where she died. 25+ more new signs are currently planned to be erected for others who have died similarly. 2007 Video Please contact us with any thoughts or suggestions you'd like to share, we would love to hear from you!
